If the series ended with 3, I think your opinion would be more
widespread.
I've enjoyed every Civilization game up to Civilization V. The sixth
game was disappointment for one simple reason: the AI was dumb as
a rock. Civlilzation always had the best AI of all the 4X games, it
wasn't really close. When a message popped up on your screen saying
a computer player declared war on you, you knew there was a huge army
sitting just outside of your vision range. In Civ6 you'll be lucky to
find a couple of weak units at your border.
I didn't have a problem with how they changed the systems up thoughout
the series. I enjoyed Endless Legend's district system and I liked
Civilization VI's take on it. That's why I was able to spend way too
many hours playing the game on the hope that maybe this time the AI
would be fixed. It'll be why I'll give a try now that I have access
to the expansions. Maybe the AI is broken because it expects all the
features of the expansions to be in play. Probably not though.
When playing a new Civilization game I'm not looking for the same game
but with better graphics. I'd be happy just playing the original game
if the game play never evolved from that. I want them to mess with
the formula so I actually have a new game to play. I think the big
mistake Firaxis made with Civilization VII was not just sticking with
the Civilization VI engine. Maybe redo the art in a different style,
but no one really cares if the game is using cutting edge shading effects.
Only having to reskin the UI would've also helped with a lot of usability
complaints about the game.
