Today I learned that Steam has a built-in FPS counter.
Actually, that's inaccurate in two ways. Firstly, I already sorta knew
that such a thing existed, maybe, but I hadn't used it, didn't know
how to use it, and wasn't 100% certain it actually existed and wasn't
just a figment of my addled mind. And two, what I actually learned
today is that Valve is updating the FPS counter to show more
information, and to be more accurate and less prone to manipulation by
developers in the future.
So really, I guess it would be better to say that today I had my
knowledge confirmed, and also learned that the feature was being
improved.
While these new options are only available -at the moment- to people
using the beta version of the Steam client*, once it releases into the
main line, the overlay will provide info not only on
frames-per-second, but also GPU and CPU utilization and temperatures,
RAM/VRaM usage, and all sorts of useful tidbits.
Which will be nice, because right now when I want to know that stuff I
tend to use third-party apps, and having one built into Steam (which,
you know, is already open when I play a game) is a welcome change.
Anyway, Steam->Settings->In game->toggle the "In-game FPS counter" for
those who were in the same limbo regarding this feature as I was.
(My only complaint is that there doesn't seem to be an easy/quick way
to toggle this from in-game, preferably with a single key-press. Not
so important when it's just a single FPS counter, but a necessity if
there's a paragraph of text on screen, so hopefully that will be
something Valve will add in soon)
* something I've no interest in using. Games are buggy enough already
without me sticking them in a buggy launcher too
