Definitely not my thing. While I can admire the game from a technical
standpoint - getting it to run on a 6502 is impressive! - I find that
style of game just too repetitive for my liking. I've always needed
narrative and purpose beyond getting a high score to keep my interest.
And - nice as the soundtrack is - the lack of variety in music would
drive me mad in short order. Just listening to it for five minutes on
the video and I'm tired of it already. I can't imagine playing an
entire game listening to that same track repeating endlessly...

Actually it is a game fallen out of time, it would have made huge waves
in the 1980s! Sure no story and short gameplay, but you do not play it
longer than 15-20 minutes anyway! Arcade style games have this tendency!

I wasn't really a fan of arcade games in the 80s either. Oh sure, at
the start, largely for the novelty of them and because they seemed so
futuristic. But I quickly migrated to games on computers with fuller
experiences, starting with Zork and moving on from there (oh, the
hours I spent on 'Ancient Art of War'!).

Which is not to imply I hold arcade games in disdain. I've often held
that there are two different types of players; the one where the
challenge and gameplay is their primary focus, and the other where the
experience and setting takes primacy (obviously there's overlap in
interests too; even die-hard PacMan fans appreciated the added lore
from the Ms. PacMan 'cutscenes' ;-). Arcade experiences focused on
satisfying the former. I gravitated towards games that catered to the
latter group.

The appeal of games like YOOMP is sometimes as hard for me to
understand as why some people like 'walking sims' is to arcade fans. I
get that people enjoy that thing and - intellectually - can even
understand why, but it still seems a very weird way of spending one's
time. ;-)
