So, Microsoft is trying something new.
On a vaguely related note, things aren't going to so well in XBox HQ,
with lots of layoffs (9000+ people) in the various gaming divisions.
The XBox hardware platform will probably linger on for at least
another generation, but it is seemingly no longer a priority for
Microsoft. It's done its job of pushing Microsoft and its services
into every household, and boiling-the-frog so we'd all accept
Software-As-A-Service as a completely normal and acceptable thing. I
guess the thinking is that, now that they've a good grip on the
market, why bother with expensive hardware.
There's also a lot of job cutting in the various game development
groups, including at Bethesda and Activision. Who would have expected
that a merger between giant companies would come at a cost to the
average worker, especially when the promise was just the opposite
(these mergers are always promoted as being good for the economy
because they'd create more jobs. It never happens). But I guess the
stockholders made out well enough.
