Side note for others interested in the mod: The GOG version is easiest
and, as noted, it works with the Steam version after some effort, but
it is incompatible with the Epic GameStore version of the game, since
it forces the most recent version on you and (from what I read)
there's no downgrade path.

Essential mods to add are the Unofficial Fixes mod and the long load
screen fix mod.

Which are these? Links please. I spent some time trying to find the
former or the effect of same from different mods but I never got
anywhere or at least load times still felt long.
