Just an FYI, if you're receiving a message about messages not being
found there was an issue at eternal september where the database was
corrupted. They're working on restoring messages but it will take
around 3 weeks.
You can see conversations about it at the newsgroup
eternal-september.support.

we need more usenet servers methinks. having everyone on one service is
an issue. For some reason Eternal September has become the standard to
go to for free access to text groups. I assume because unlike others it
was comparatively good with spam during the google groups spam waves.
It's got longevity on its side too. A lot of free NNTP servers are
fly-by-night; they last only a few years before the person offering the
service calls it quits (no blame on them; it's often a thankless job).
Eternal September has been around since... 2009, it looks like (that's
as far as the web.archive.org shows, anyway).
ES was around before that, but under the name Motzarella if I remember
well. I don't know why Ray changed it back then, but my first account with
him was under the different name.
Switching between newsservers isn't hard, but it's an annoyance that
most people don't want to deal with. Going with Eternal September, you
have some confidence that you won't have to switch to some new server in
six months. You can't say that about a lot of the other free offerings.
Unfortunately sometimes the problem is a bit more fatal, albasani.net used
to be a rather steadfast free server, but that one got done in by the
death of it's admin.
But anyway, I realized lately that the usenet top1000 now doesn't even
have 1000 servers in it anymore. I mean, this place has lain fallow for a
while, but at least servers were running. That's not the case anymore.
(and I realized my small uucp server is in the top 300)
