My favourite Civ game though isn't even technically a Civ game, Alpha

Civ in space. Close enough.

I wonder where Alpha Centauri sits for Civ fans if you included it in
the mainline series. I remember it being very well received at the
time. I think I would have liked it a lot myself but I never got
around to playing it.
Hmmm. My rankings probably don't match most Civ-fans, but I'd put it
in third place, between Civ2 and Civ4. But I'm the oddball who loves
the original 1991 game most of all the versions.
My Civilization Rankings:
Civilization 1 (1992)
Civilization 4 (2006)
(Alpha Centauri) (1999)
Civilization 2 (1996)
Civilization 5 (2010)
Civilization 3 (2004)
I left out "Civilization 6" (2016) because, as mentioned in an earlier
post, I can't really remember much about it. If pressed, I'd probably
slot it between Civ3 and Civ5. "Civilization 7" (2025) is similary
excluded simply because I haven't played it yet.
"Alpha Centauri" (or, as I often think of it in my head, "Alpha Civ")
had a lot of things I liked about it. The fact that it wasn't set on
Earth was a very welcome change; the new setting and ideas were quite
well implemented. But the gameplay (and to some degree, the visuals)
just weren't quite as engaging. In some ways, the game was just TOO
alien for me to immerse myself in like I did with the other games in
the series. So, yes; I loved it because it was different, and hated it
for the same reason ;-P
But I'd like to give a shout-out to "Civilization Revolution", at
least the IPad version; although a cutback and very obviously
made-for-mobile game, it captured the feel of Civilization quite well.
It's much shallower than the other Civ games, but it's made so you can
finish a campaign fairly quickly (in a matter of hours, not days or
weeks). It would probably get a spot between 2 and 5.
