// New Starcraft games are being considered/developed.
"Hurrah!" go millions of gamers. But then:
// To be created by third-party developers whose previous // games were all mobile titles, such as NetMarble, NC, Nexon // and Krafton Clash
And around the world, those millions of gamers suddenly have visions of "Dungeon Keeper Mobile" and scream in terror.
Apparently, Acti-Blizz is still in talks about deciding which developer gets the license, and at the moment it is just news about the pitches (and not the actual games) that is available. Details on the games being pitched is fairly light, and it's possible that they COULD be more "Starcraft-as-we-know-it". But the portfolios of the developers in question doesn't imply anything but mobile slop.
(Also, that these developers are also mainly focused on Korean games, and the Korean gaming scene is nowadays much more forgiving of MTX nonsense than western markets doesn't inspire much hope)
Personally, I'm not that disappointed. I was never the biggest fan of Starcraft, and I've tired of the RTS genre in general. If I never got to play "Starcraft III", I wouldn't lose much sleep about it. (Plus, you all know my opinion of sequels and remakes over new IPS anyway). But I think it's telling that after boasting about how the merger with Microsoft would unleash a new age for classic franchises like Starcraft, the first we hear of is mobile-slop. It's great to see these mega-mergers of giant corporations working out for the gamer, eh? Why bother with innovative and quality games when you've captured the market with your sheer size? Give the customers crap; where else are they going to go?
