It's called "Star Wars:Outcast". Here's a trailer if you missed the
announcement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QP_wXv2ErgI
Okay, so this bit isn't as newsworthy as the new Doom game. New Star
Wars games are a dime a dozen. I've over thirty of them on PC alone
(and that's not including duplicates). So announcing a new Star Wars
game is sort of like telling people that the sun is rising in the
morning. It's more unusual when there's NOT one being developed.
Still, I've got to show interest. I'm a Star Wars fan and we must
blindly consume Star Wars media of any and all sorts. A new Star Wars
video game? Sure, I'll show interest.
Except... it's /really/ hard this time. Because it's not just a game
being developed by Ubisoft, it's a Ubisoft Game. You know the sort of
thing I mean; big open world, hollow storytelling, adequate gameplay,
and lots of grind. Even in the trailer, where they've gussied it up as
much as they can, you can FEEL the Ubi-stench on the game. That utter
lack of originality and vive. The refusal to take risks. For fuck
sakes, they're even going back to Tatooine, the ass-end of the Star
Wars universe where every hack writer sends their heroes.
Sure, it's got the LOOK of the movies. You can never say that a
Ubisoft game lacks in the visuals. The robots look like robots from
Star Wars. The space ships look like space ships from Star Wars. The
vest-wearing space-pirates look vest-wearing space-pirates from Star
Wars. Ubisoft is great at emulating a look.
And -while the trailer is pretty light in showing off that department-
I'm sure the minute-to-minute gameplay will be fine too. Not great.
But fine. It'll be enough to keep you playing for hours, because
Ubisoft has perfectly captured the formula of making you think that
/if you only play *just* a little bit longer/ you'll finally come to
the really awesome part of the game. They'll drip feed you /just
enough/ dopamine to make you not realize the tediousness of the
experience. It's only when you finally get to the end of the game that
you wonder why you played so long.
So I watch that trailer and there's part of my brain that goes, "Oooh,
Star Wars" and "Yeah, let me be a scoundrel rogue "Starfield"-ing my
way through a galaxy far-far-away!" It's a dream come true for anyone
who ever wished they could be like Han Solo! But even with all that, I
still see everything I hate about Ubisoft games leaking out of the
video, and my brain revolts at the idea of having to play another one
of their titles.
Why did it have to be Ubisoft?

Did they run out of historical times to pillage? Off to pillage sci-fi
now (yes I know it's a long time ago, but space-fantasy.)

I think I'd rather go back to playing SW Galaxies. I hear it's less
grindy/paywalled now.
I'm not sure I could go back to Galaxy. It's just too old, both
visually and in terms of game-play. I know there are people who love
that style -and there is something appealing about the freedom some of
the original mechanics offered- but I was never really a fan.
I found "Star Wars: Old Republic" more appealing, because it had a
much stronger narrative and was bearable as a single-player
experience.
Or just play the old "Dark Forces" games. Or the "X-wing" franchise.
Or the "Jedi: Survivor" series. Or even "Force Unleashed". There's no
lack of Star Wars titles to play, and -even though many of them were
flawed- all of them look more exciting to me than what I've seen of
"Outcast".
