I don't think it would be physically possible to live where I am without air conditioning in the summer. I know people used to do it, but then tons of people would drop dead every summer too, and it still happens if there's power outages. Solar would be great to keep that happening.

In the UK there really isn't any need for them in houses but I do remember when I visited my brother in Dallas, then you did. One thing I didn't understand was yes have the AC on but do you really need it so low that I now feel the need to put a jumper on and my legs still feel cold as I'm wearing shorts. Then it was back outside and the heat felt even more oppressive.
It is part of Texas culture to support the oil industry. Using as much electricity as possible so more natural gas has to be burned for power is an aspect of that religion. :P
