I just don't think pre-orders are worth the risk any more especially in the age of digital store fronts. You might get some virtual 'baubles' or even access a few days early* but that's about it. In return you get the possibility that the game won't deliver what it said and the enjoyment of playing a game that is likely to be buggy. The last one I did was Bioshock and it wasn't it bad game as such but just not the excellent game I though I was getting.
*There now seems to be a trend of providing even early access but only in premium editions. Oh joy, I get to pay extra to give you some free testing. Sounds reasonable.
