In the UK there really isn't any need for them in houses but I do remember when I visited my brother in Dallas, then you did. One thing I didn't understand was yes have the AC on but do you really need it so low that I now feel the need to put a jumper on and my legs still feel cold as I'm wearing shorts. Then it was back outside and the heat felt even more oppressive.
It is part of Texas culture to support the oil industry. Using as much electricity as possible so more natural gas has to be burned for power is an aspect of that religion. :P
Another thing I remember was using the light railway system in the suburbs of Dallas and think the station looks like it's about a ten minute walk away which was true but fat chance of actually being able to walk there. Having public transport that's only accessible by car, where is the sense in that.
The other thing I found was just how much religion is in your face compared to the UK. Why is this person asking me what church I attend and then looking perplexed when I say I'm not religious. Why are they then following it up with you should visit our church, why would I do that, which bit of non-religious is hard to understand.
