I've been waiting for this one... ever since the free release of
Classic Marathon 1.
(

missed it ;-)
Although mostly just because it's a more convenient way of getting the
game. The Marathon titles have been freely available for years, and
these Steam versions aren't really adding anything new except to add
one-click installation and easier modding through the workshop. But
that's nothing to sneeze at, so I'm happily adding it to my library.
The games themselves, though, aren't likely to excite most modern
gamers. They're more interesting as a historical curiousity; partly as
evidence of the state of FPS gaming in the mid-90s, and partly because
of the franchise's relation to the better-known "Halo" games. But even
as a 'boomer shooter' they just aren't that much fun to play. The
levels are annoyingly mazelike, the weapons lack the visceral and
satisfying punch you'd expect, and the story (which is the most
memorable part of the game) is told through easy-to-miss terminals
scattered across the levels.
But I like them anyway.
I'm still waiting on Marathon Infinity to complete the trilogy. It'll
come out soon, I'm sure (probably in mid September if the developers
keep to the same schedule) and I'll grab that one too.

you. ;-)
