I did watch something about this and one thing it reminded me of was the
days of low/medium settings being in stark contrast to high/ultra have
generally passed. It's not that you can't see a difference but instead
it's just not as important as it used to be.

yes... definitely!
I guess it is more like FPS, but given that when I play I usually use a
Steam Deck nowadays I am a low end gamer anyway!

I mean... are consoles _ever_ really high-end? Even when new, they
tend to lag behind the capabilities of the best PCs. Their advantages
have always been in price, simplicitity and compactness, not actual
performance. If you care about getting the best visuals, you _aren't_
playing it on console.

Then again, does it matter? Computers (and consoles) are already so
powerful that they can almost effortlessly provide
more-than-good-enough visuals already. The fact that I can play games
on a 7-year old laptop (which has the graphics performance of a
fifteen-year old desktop) and still have a pleasing experience is
proof of that. It's gotten to the point where I can't even make out
many of the 'high end' features of the newest games. "Oh, this game
uses raytracing? Looks pretty much the same as that one over there
that uses baked-on lighting."

Sony chasing after the high-end just seems like wasted effort. Except
for a tiny proportion of their market, I don't think most people
actually care (I mean, they'll buy it because the hype will make them
think its important but I think most of them - minus the marketing
push- would be just as happy sticking with their old platforms.

I'm generally not a fan of Nintendo but in this regard I think they
got it right. They hopped off the graphics-train and started focusing
on the experience of the game itself. Now, personally I think they
could have stood to stay on the train for a stop or too longer, but in
general I agree they were right to stop chasing after top-end visuals.
