How about a short CRAP poll for once? I know, you're looking askance
and saying, "You? Short? I don't think so. This is going to be a five-page essay and have thirty options to chose from." But just you
watch! It's gonna be real short!
Here we go:
Subtitles: On or off?
0) Off 1) On C) I never play games were people speak
See? I _can_ do short!
Me, I almost always turn 'em on. Partly, because -yes- I'm getting a
wee bit older and the ears just aren't as good as they used to be. But also, I read a heck of a lot faster than people talk, and that either lets me skip through superfluous conversations without missing
context, or lets me focus on other things (like the visuals) while
the NPCs are yammering away. Plus, sometimes the subtitles give a bit
of extra context that I find interesting, especially if it adds to
the world-building.
So, a definite 'on' for me.
What about you? Where do you stand on the vital 'subtitles' issue? Please provide your short answer below ;-)
English is not my native language, but it is my main one nowadays. No
issues with listening to talk shows, podcast, etc, but when it comes to
other media I always have subs enabled when they are available.
- I may missheard a word
- So much stuff is going at the same time on screen that I can't pay
attention to whatever Kratos and Atreius are shouting at each other
- Sound is poorly mixed and it's hard to hear with so many explosions
- Character talks in a extreme thick accent with lots of slang (Think
YOLO: Crystal Fantasy)
My obsession with subs came with Playstation 1. For each game that had
both perfect voice acting and subtitles (Metal Gear Solid, Broken Sword
2...), you were guaranteed to have one without subtitles and subpar
voice work. Megaman Legends 2 is an infamous example. Poorly recorded,
gives trouble to native english speakers, hard to understand... The kind
of dialogue you only hear in a cambridge or TOEIC test. I ended missing
a ton of the game's plot, and I can only enjoy it now because 20 years
later, I have gotten much better at it.
