I shared in your joy of playing MechWarrior III. I used to play in an
online mp community. Also, I had the Sidewinder FF Pro (with the joyport
plug), and the force feedback effects in that game were amazing.
Oooh, and that soundtrack; you really felt the weight of each of your
mech's footsteps in each of the music's beat. Visually -and in some
respects, mechanically- Mechwarrior 2 was a bit disappointing, but
that soundtrack helped elevate it to a classic!
(although I personally much preferred the Mechwarrior 3 soundtrack ;-)
I bought an MS Sidewinder 3D Pro, partially to play that game, and its
capabilities were an excellent match for Mechwarrior 2. Just the
ability to rotate torso by twisting the joystick handle really helped
with the feeling of immersion. Arguably, mouse-control made for faster
turns and more precise aiming... but that worked against the feel of
being surrounded by dozens of tons of machinery and armor. I think
that's one of the reasons MW5 didn't grab me the same way; it's
designed for WASD/mouse controls, and you move as if you were a
regular FPS character. It's much too fluid and quick.
Lately, I've been playing Battletech with minatures and hex maps.
I haven't really played in years. It's too expensive a habit to get
back into (all those minis!) and I've no real tolerance anymore for
the finicky nature of painting the little things anyway.
But I did enjoy the "Battletech" game which came out in 2018; it
captured a lot of the feel of the tabletop experience, at least
mechanically.
