But the Mechwarrior games remain the grand-daddy of them all, and
-IMHO- the best of the bunch.

Earthsiege and Heavy Gear had their points (loved the mix 'n' match
parts ability in Heavy Gear.)
Mistake me not; I quite enjoyed those games. "Earthsiege 2" still
holds up quite well, if you allow it some grace due to its age. The
"Heavy Gear" games are a bit worse for wear; even at the time, they
were a bit behind the curve technologically and in terms of visuals
and map design (especially HG1) the game was really rough. But they
had their moments.
And "Terra Nova" remains a perennial favorite, although it's arguably
more a powered-armor game than proper mech-sim.
The rest on that last, though... well, they've largely been forgotten
for good reason. Most of the named games were PC titles first and
foremost (a few had console ports) but for some reason, aside from the
most famous, most mecha-sims on PC were awful. The consoles always had
a better selection with better overall quality. Aside from the
aforemention "Armored Core" and "Front Mission" games, the various
Gundam and Robotech titles were quite fun too.
Not quite mech-SIMS, but I also very much enjoyed the two "Mech
Commander" games. For obvious reasons, strategy + giant robots has
always worked well with the Battletech franchise, but it's a good mix
for the genre as well. Heck, I even enjoyed the ancient DOS games like
"Power DOLLS" and "Metal & Lace" (and it wasn't for the sleaze). Giant
robots just make everything better ;-)
Warning: Resistance levels to buying MW5:Clans at 52% and falling...
Stay strong Spalls, stay strong!
It's down to 47%. All those positive reviews aren't helping!!!
