I really get the impression that Valve thought up as Steam points as
being something with real monetary use (you get 1 point per 1 US
dollar of purchases, I think), that could then maybe be redeemed to
buy games or something real.
Except then the lawyers pointed out that it was a form of currency and
would probably cause them all sorts of legal problems, especially
given how many jurisdictions Valve operates in, so they quickly backed
away from the idea. Except now people have thousands of points and
nothing to do with it? Quick, give them useless, untradable digital
gimcracks.
[I like the profile page. It lets me quickly see how many
games I own on Steam, and how many reviews I've posted.
Although the difference between those two numbers is
disturbingly large... maybe its better if I stop looking.]
I've used Steam points to 'buy' rewards (equally useless) for good
reviews, but that's pretty much it, and mostly because I've earned so
many points I don't know what else to do with them.
