The game was fun, except for that incessent respawning.
Is there maybe a mod for that?
Not that I ever found. From what I recall, it's deeply encoded into
the game and isn't something that can easily be tweaked out without
access to the source code (or some serious hacking skills, but "Far
Cry 2" doesn't seem to be the sort of game that inspires people with
that skill-set to fix it).
But last time I looked was in... good gog, 2015! When I last played
it. Perhaps some enterprising youth has fixed the problem in the near
decade since I searched.
I still think the game is worth playing. The combat is sublime. When
you're running around the map fleeing from one bandit group,
accidentally bump into the next, all the while the brush is afire
around you and your weapons are falling apart in your hands... it can
be really fun.
In some regards I think it's like "Doom 3"; it is probably a game
that's better played in very brief chunks. With "Doom 3", I got the
best experience limiting myself to playing only one level at a time,
then quitting to do something else. "Far Cry 2" is probably like that;
if you limit yourself to one mission (or just one crossing of the
map), then the respawning likely doesn't seem so problematic.
But that's just not how I play games, unfortunately.
