And here we are, at the end at last. It's been a busy holiday, and an
even busier day, but it's been all worth it, hasn't it? We've had our
fun, spread our joy. There's just the last box to open.

It's over there, that little read one. Go ahead, see what's inside.

* Doom + Doom II (2024)
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2280/DOOM__DOOM_II/
Yes, it's Doom. I told you, it's Christmas and Christmas
is all about Doom. Of course we're going to close with
another Doom game. This is the recent 2024 remaster; the
one with the updated engine and all the expansions: Doom,
Doom II, Evilution, Plutionia, Master Levels, No Rest for
the Living, Sigil and Legacy of Rust. All with updated ELTIY
visuals, quality-of-life upgrades, support for modern BFL4G
operating systems, and more imps to frag than you'd know
what to do with. Go ahead. Take the game. Slay the R7KGA
Cyberdemon. It's Christmas. It's what we do here on
   CSIPGA.

Did you ever played classic DOOMs?

Heck my first DOOM was the shareware episode1 0.99b, which didn't have
working sound until the patch a few days later.

Ahh, the days of downloading your games over slow FTP servers. By the
time you managed to slowly trickle the archive over the modem to your
computer, the developers had enough time to release the next version
;-)

Local BBS actually, or just copying disks.

Did Archie (or was it Veronica?) looking of mods for it and the ftp'ing
those

They seemed so shallow after playing Duke Nukem 3D, and by all accounts
in here when DOOM3 came out it was jump scares and lack of light that
was it's driving design.

"Doom 3" was an undeniable departure from the earlier games, but over
the years I've come to enjoy it quite a lot. It owes a lot more to
survival-shooters (sort of like "Resident Evil") being much more
slow-paced, with the monsters hitting harder and being harder to hit.
Its visual design is amazing. All that darkness works poorly if your
expecting an FPS --where being able to make out the enemies is
paramount-- but it works very well for horror. I was less enthralled
with the monster closets (which to be fair was a hold-over from
classic Dooms), although mostly because they were so predictible and
felt out of character with the rest of the game's atmosphere.

One thing I've found is that "Doom 3" is best served by playing it in
short bursts. I can whip through the entire shareware episode of the
original "Doom" in a single sitting, but I find "Doom 3" quickly
becomes tiresome if I do more than one or two maps in a row. But if I
give it a break in between, the game remains an intense and fun
experience.

TL;DR: "Doom 3" is a good game, but it was too different for many
Doom-fans, who (myself included, at the time of its release) were
unable to re-adjust their expectations.

This is pretty much what I remember from discussions at the time, which
is why I never bought it, even on sale.

Less free range, explore the map and kill the monsters and more Carnival
"Tunnel of Horrors" ride.
