So got Mrs. vallor's Linux workstation set up -- with X52 pro
HOTAS and everything -- and we booted up Elite Dangerous Odyssey
this evening.
She's flown before, but it was just a test flight with auto-docking.
This time she flew the first tutorial, which is through an asteroid
field to an outpost (but no docking). Then she did the second
tutorial, a cargo run where she undocked (manually), flew through the
mail slot, cleared the station, targeted the nearby destination
system, and jumped there.
I got her to back off on the throttle before she crashed
into the star, then she flew to the destination Coriolis
station, where I showed her how to set 75% throttle. She
got through the mail slot, then it was time to dock...where
she had the most difficulty. I showed her how to use the
lateral thrusters to get over the pad, and we finally got
her docked.
Now I need to make her a cheat sheet of what all the controls
do. She's bound and determined to learn to fly spaceships. (She's
watched me for years, and asked, "when do I get to do that?" Now
you can, Honey -- now you can.)
Our ultimate goal is to go off exploring. Our immediate goal
is to get her able to dock a little better, and for that,
she can just fly in solo at my carrier, where it's safe... and
no "hurry up" pressure from the tutorial voice.
Her new Linux workstation:
Gigabyte B760I AORUS PRO
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-14700F
32G of RAM (DDR5)
1T NVMe drive
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER (AD104-A) (12G)
Linux Mint 22.1
