Continuing my recent trend of "let's steal topics from websites as a
stepping off point for new discussions", I present this one:
"8 Classic Games You Haven't Played (but should)"
https://www.xda-developers.com/classic-games-havent-played-but-should/
I would like to add "The Need for Speed" to the list.
Still enjoying this game.
Yeah, a lot of those tracks are really good. The first "City" track
with its go-fast! straight-aways; the gorgeous colors of "Autumn
Valley"; the twisty roads of "Alpine" and the vistas of "Coastal". It
was an absolutely jaw-dropping game on its release, visually, and
quite fun too. Personally, it hasn't held up quite as well in terms of
gameplay --at least, not for me-- but I have a great deal of nostalgia
for that classic.
But I was always much more fond of "Need for Speed 3: Hot Pursuit". I
played the hell out of that game, and to this day I still remember the
twists and turns of each track pretty well. And a number of the tracks
from that game have migrated to my MP3 collection so I can listen to
them when I go out-and-about in the real-world. ;-)
If I had to rank the NFS games by enjoyment (not necessarily quality),
it would probably go like this:
Need For Speed 3: Hot Pursuit (1998)
Need For Speed: Most Wanted (2005)
Need For Speed 1 (1994)
Need For Speed 5: Porsche Unleashed (2000)
Need For Speed: Underground 1 (2003)
Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit (2013)
Need For Speed: Underground 2 (2004)
Need For Speed 4: High Stakes (1999)
Need For Speed: Most Wanted (2012)
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2016)
With the rest of the series settling into an unsorted mash at the
bottom. Generally, I've found the quality and fun of the series to be
diminishing as the years go on, to the point I haven't even bothered
with the latest release, 2022's "Need For Speed: Unbound", and
considering I've managed to play _all_ the rest of the series (with
the sole exception being 2015's "No Limits" for Android), that's
saying something. ;-)
