The Total Recall remake was bad IMO.

IIRC, reviews at the time agree with you.

Ditto. I'd rather rewatch the original!
Heh. I went to the theatre to see that one (the original, not the
remake).
The first movie was fun, but it really wasn't very good either. It was
an incredibly /stupid/ movie, requiring you to not only disconnect
your brain but to also stupefy most of your internal neurons. But it
had a few fun lines ("Getcha ass to Maahs") and some memorable scenes.
Beyond that, though, it was complete schlock and of all Verhoeven's
movies, it baffles me the most why it got a remake. It lacked any
cogent message or originality. It's like remaking Stallone's "Cobra"
or Norris's "Invasion USA"; it's unnecessary and unwanted.
I think it's a good movie because it's, well as you say fun. It's very much a product of its time with over the top violence, corny one liners that would make James Bond wince and doesn't take itself very seriously. Oh and Sharon Stone sweaty in a leotard, you can't ask for more than that.
