Gaming in your 30s? Really? Try gaming after 45, when all your twitch
skills have completely left you and you can't beat the AI in a button
mashing contest any more.
Haha, my twitch skills left after 30! :P Funny, I used to hate turn
based games, but I love turn based games. :D
I judge my rate of decline by how fast I can drive in racing games. I
used to be able to handle the turns at 280mph, no problem. Now I
struggle at half that. ;-)
How about IRL? ;-)
I'll be honest, I start getting a bit antsy these days pushing the car
above 100kmh (65mph for people in Myanmar, Liberia and elsewhere). I
used to be more comfortable driving at those speeds and above. I think
it's less about reflexes and more because I'm in a tiny car and
American tank-cars are starting to become more common on the road
(also, an injury in my arm makes turning a bit harder than it used to
be)
But I switch off the turn-signal immediately after use, so at least I
have that saving grace ;-)
My mind, on the other hand, is as sharp as it ever was!
(which you can take to mean however you like ;-)
It happens in all fast faced games even in arcade games from the rad 80s
for me. :(
I've a hard time comparing, since --aside from racers-- I didn't
really engage with action games as much in my younger days. I jumped
ship early to computer games and focused more on RPG, adventure and
strategy titles, where quick-reflexes weren't required. When I did
play the occasional platformer or shooter, I didn't excel but that was
less because of slow reflexes and more because I just didn't know the
strategies (and didn't care to learn them). I think I play more action
titles nowadays then I did in the past.
I guess maybe I've slowed down with regards to FPS games, but the
genre has changed so much that --again-- it's hard to make direct
comparison. I think I'm still as skilled at "Doom" (1993)* as I was
back in the day. Maybe a bit slower, but not much.
No, mostly I see the aging effect in racing games.
* <gripe> I /hate/ how I have to add the years to game titles now
because publishers keep re-using the title for long-running series.
Just stick a number on there; nobody interested in "Doom" isn't going
to play it just because you called it 'Doom IV'! </gripe>
