I bought the game for a very simple reason: it's a successor to the
forgotten and flawed 4X strategy game, 1997's "Emperor of the Fading
Suns", which can be best described as the bastard child of
"Civilization" and "Master of Orion". "Emperor" was not a good game,
but it wasn't completely without merit either. The fairest description
Speaking of which, apparently an "Enhanced" edition of "Emperor of the
Fading Suns" recently released. The original was long available on
GOG, but now it's 'enhanced' with 'new features, modernized gameplay,
and immersive visuals designed to expand on the already treasured
strategy title.' (their words, not mine. I don't actually know what
the new version brings to the table).
I honestly couldn't recommend the game to new players but I found it
amusing to see this ancient game in the news again. And who knows,
maybe with this increased attention a proper sequel* with all the
necessary polish and modern ammenities can be created. But I wouldn't
count on it.
(If you do own the original on GOG, apparently you get the enhanced
edition for free)
The soundtrack remains awesome, though. The GOG version even gives you
the tunes in OGG format for your listening pleasure ;-)
* Wait, did I just speak in favor of a sequel? Who am I and what have
I done with the real me?!?!?
