 So why make it a Marathon game?
 

Marathon has a bit more clout than you expect in Europe. It managed to come out at exactly the right time and moment for people who were first getting computers after the problems the fall of communism caused.
Where Marathon barely made a blip in the west (I barely knew it existed growing up in Germany), Polish people especially seem really fond of the game. And as Poland has now established itself quite firmly in the market (CD Project/GoG is a Polish company) some of the Polish nostalgia for specific games now bleeds into the rest of the market.
