You can give it to me. /s
For me, I'm fine with the visuals of games of that era in everything
EXCEPT the character models. The levels, the lighting; all that is
obviously dated but I can deal with it. It's fine; there's sometimes
even some beauty in it.
But, oh boy, those hundred-poly character models? They pull me right
out of the experience. Whether it's "Thief", or "Quake", or "Shogo",
or "Jedi Knight"; I see those models and it becomes a struggle to keep
playing.
It's a major failure of many fan "graphics overhaul" projects that
they almost entirely focus on the textures and rarely bother with the
underlying models. I understand why --running a texture through an AI
upscaler is a lot easier than making and rigging an entirely new
model-- but the pixelated textures (or their upscaled versions) become
barely noticable after a few hours. Those character models are an
eyesore throughout the entire game. ;-)
