I'm a sucker for the Aliens franchise, and have over the years played
pretty much all the games in that franchise. But there's one recent
game I haven't played, and that was "Rogue Incursion", and that solely
because it was a VR exclusive. As much as I liked my xenomorph tales,
I wasn't going to buy a VR headset just for the privilege of seeing a
facehugger latch onto me in super-realistic 3D. Fortunately, it was
recently announced* that an 'Evolved Edition' would soon release that
allowed all us non-VR Luddites to finally experience the horror.
So I'm all for that.
It does say something about the state of VR, though, that the
publisher has to release a non-VR version. Despite all the hype about
how VR was going to revolutionize the industry and we'd all soon be
playing with heavy headsets strapped to our face, that never really
happened. The majority of gamers shrugged and said, "You know what,
I'm fine with my flatscreen TV/monitor". And now the rest of the
industry seems to be turning its back on the technology too.
I hope this game will be better than the no-VR mods for "Half Life:
Alyx" though. Admittedly, those were fan-creations that had no access
to the source code, so optimizations were quite limited, but that
experience was quite rough. Presumably the "Rogue Incursion" game will
be more polished... but I'm definitely waiting for user reviews before
I even think of buying this game.
Still, more Aliens games are always welcome (well, unless the game
somehow involves Gearbox Studios; then I'll pass). Send in the
xenomorphs!
