The only app I used to play games with my friends back in the day was
a free piece of software called Hamachi.
I remember using Hamachi but I can't actually recall anymore what it
did. I remember it was a free alternative to some other service
though.
(Heh. I have v1.0.0.62 stashed away on my hard-drive, complete with a
descriptive text file, dated November 2006.
"Hamachi is a zero-configuration virtual private networking (VPN)
application. In other words Hamachi is a program that allows you to
arrange multiple computers into their own secure network just as if
they were connected by a physical network cable."
I think I used it for a while to give myself access to my network
shares while on the road. Apparently it was eventually bought out by
LogMeIn
I'm halfway tempted to see if it still works :-)
