I think just looking at inflation is a rather blunt tool as it doesn't take into account factors such as price anchoring, the number of games being released, all those freebies and the number of copies sold.
I'd probably also add that the triple-A publishers obviously do think there's a decent profit to be made even with the increased development costs.
Saying all of that, what a stupid thing to say. It wouldn't have been much worse if he had just said, it's only $80 what are you moaning about. I spent more than that on a burger yesterday. Border Lands 4 is not GTA 6.
