Let the new month begin! And, more importantly, let 8 new games be
added to my video-game library! Because, really, that's what it's all
about; keeping The Number high. Actually /playing/ any of these titles
is just optional. Although it's nice when the games are actually good
enough that it happens. ;-)
Let's go raid the Humble Choice pantry and see what goodies are
waiting this month.
* Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2005010/Warhammer_40000_Boltgun/ I'm /really/ glad to see this one here now, because I
was very close to actually buying it on Steam, and I'd hate
for me to do so only for it so show up later on Humble
Choice as a duplicate. It's not so much that I really love
Warhammer, or boomer shooters, but neither do I really
/dislike/ them, and this game felt like it would have been a
nice (and inexpensive) change of pace. Well, now I get it
for even cheaper!
* Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2521380/Legacy_of_Kain_Soul_Reaver_12_Remastered/ The good thing about games like this is that its titles
are so self-explanatory that I barely need to say anything
about them (not that will stop me). I've always been luke-
warm on the "Legacy of Kain" games -- they're fine, but
nothing I ever rush out to play-- but I don't really mind
getting an (almost-sorta) free upgrade.
* Nobody Wants to Die
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1939970/Nobody_Wants_to_Die/ An action-adventure game set in a cyberpunkian dystopia,
with Noir vibes. Despite it looking like a free-roaming FPS,
it's more akin to a first-person adventure game with little
freedom to explore. You're directed from place to place and
your sleuthing is about as involved as in "Condemned", where
you're told exactly what tool to use and what to look for
in every room. An inconsistent story and writing doesn't
help either. The visuals are gorgeous, though.
* Dungeons of Hinterberg
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1983260/Dungeons_of_Hinterberg/ A third-person action adventure; run and jump through the
Alps and battle various monsters that get in your way.
I'm not really sold on the game's aesthetics, and the
gameplay seems pretty generic to me. Maybe I'll give it
a look, but as likely it'll rot in the library.
* Tchia
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1496590/Tchia/ A cutesy survival-exploration game; sort of like "Raft"
but with less dying and crafting. I'm not really into
cutesy so this game isn't for me.
* Sker Ritual
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1492070/Sker_Ritual/ A "zombie survival FPS"; run around frantically
collecting gear against waves of enemies, leveling up in
hopes of surviving the next wave. It has some neat visuals
but looks a bit repetitive (there's only a limited number
of maps, and no mods) and there's some concern about
the network stability and performance. Might be worth a
quick look but doesn't seem something that would hold
my attention very long.
* Biped
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1071870/Biped/ A co-op shared-screen platform-adventure game, where you
and a friend have to help each other move across the
level. As a devout player of single-player games, this
one has extremely limited appeal to me.
* Havendock
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2020710/Havendock/ Another of these cute 'cozy colony' games (e.g.,
"Stardew Valley" or "Harvest Moon" games). This one
apparently has you building out a small port-town. It's
not really a genre I enjoy though, and reviews on this
one are pretty middling, many mentioning excessive
grind and poor production values.
Some good variety this month but a number of games lack in quality
control or just don't appeal to me (too much 'cute' for my liking).
Still, the inclusion of "Boltgun" saves this month's selection, and
-even if they're flawed- "Nobody Wants to Die" and "Sker Ritual" are
probably worth a look. This month's selection just scrapes by on the
'is it worth it?' category... at least for me.
We'll see what we get next month. See you again all in 30 days!
