Anyone buying this at launch? What's your opinion of the new console?
It's feeling like Wii-U redux to me, though I'll probably eventually get
one for the bigger screen.
Nope, but that's hardly a surprise. Whatever else may be problematic
with the device, it already suffers from three major strikes as far as
I'm concerned: it's a console, it's a hand-held, and it's Nintendo.
Which isn't to say those are necessarily bad things and other people
should avoid it because of those reasons... but they're three things I
generally have little interest in.
- I just prefer playing on more open platforms like PC over
locked-down consoles.
- I don't really enjoy playing on hand-helds, partly because they've
had to strip down their hardware capability for the sake of
portability, but also because I don't enjoy the form factor (give me a
mouse/keyboard and a giant screen, thank you very much!).
- And Nintendo games have very little appeal to me. There's an
aesthetic to them -both in visuals, characters and gameplay- that
generally turns me off.
Add to that my general dislike of Nintendo-the-company and the
announced price-hikes, plus all the other stuff you mentioned, and
that most of the 'exciting features' (Gamecube ports? Camera?) don't
excite me in the least, and buying a Switch 2 is probably the last
thing I'm likely to do. If I were going to buy a handheld gaming
platform, Valve's SteamDeck is far, far, FAR more likely a purchase.
Certainly were I ever to get a Switch2, it wouldn't be at launch.
Probably not even ten years down the line. Heck, I still haven't
gotten a Gameboy Advanced yet!
But, again, that's just me. Nintendo is beloved by a lot of people,
and I can understand that, even if I myself don't feel the same way.
But you did ask. ;-P
