It's an enjoyable mess!

I would never play these games. Years ago, I actually tried playing DR1
because she asked, and while I could do a funny YouTuber routine (such as
rolling my eyes and chucking my controller every time Hagakure showed
up), the gameplay is eye glazingly boring until the trials. The graphics
are also pure s__t.

The developer also has a weird sense of sexual humor, and they are
basically written for 14 year old boys, so be ready for that.

Otherwise, for lore's sake you want to start at the beginning. For
gameplay's sake, the improvement in the series is exponential at each
sequel. Character development doesn't really take off until V3.
