Yep, we had a R&D head who was absolutely awful but it was all
overlooked. It even got to the stage where the head of software managed
to convince the higher ups to do workshops with all employees to talk
about moral. Basically the same few names came up again and again.

Predictable though the only outcome was to move the head of software
sideways. The reason the R&D head was finally sacked was in a meeting
with a large client the female project manager asked to have a look at
some of the timescales that were being talked about. His response, you
don't need to worry your pretty little head about that.
Oh, Oh My.
The R&D head did manage to get a laugh in the office even though indirectly. One of our project managers basically refused to change his timescales to ones that looked better on the grounds that there is no way they can be met, seems sensible to me. The R&D head didn't like that so thought the best course of action was to report him to HR for misconduct to try and get him fired. HR were having none of it but it did spur on the project manager to go and get another job.
At his leaving do he did the normally spiel but also thanked the R&D head (who wasn't there at the time) for helping him get a new job along with some other comments. That generated laughter, cheers and clapping. Some of our higher ups were visiting our office at the time and you could see them all looking at each other wondering what was going on.
