I mean, it probably doesn't surprise anybody, but recent tests
indicate that games run on identical hardware and settings have better
performance running on SteamOS than they do on Windows 11.*

For all that it's good news, these stats don't tell the whole story.
These benefits only really apply to games that have native versions
for SteamOS/Linux; using the various shims and cheats to get games
that think they're running under Windows running under SteamOS can
have significant performance impacts. That's a lot of the games on
Steam! Plus, SteamOS only have limited support for huge swathes of PC
hardware, and if you aren't using stuff on the approved list, you're
either SOL or gonna see even more performance hits. Let's not also
forget that SteamOS does a lot less than Windows11 (arguably, one of
the reasons Win11 has such a performance hit is that it is DOING TOO
MUCH in the background, but one person's "too much" is another
person's "can't live without it"). But favorable as it is to Valve,
it's not really an apple-to-apple comparison.

Still, it just goes to show that SteamOS --and Linux-- are
ready-for-primetime when it comes to games, and can be a viable
alternative for many PC gamers. Considering the rough start that
SteamOS began with (originally designed for OEM "SteamMachines", it
was little more than a clunky Linux fork at start, and a big reason
why those OEM PCs didn't take off), it's admirable to see how far
Valve has taken it.

SteamOS was always Valve's ace-in-the-hole in case Microsoft started
getting too pushy with its monopoly; a warning shot that Valve might
just take their ball and go home if Microsoft started infringing on
Valve's chosen marketplace. This shows that it remains a threat to
Microsoft -albeit a distant one- and not one the Seattle company can
ignore.
