Define 'play'. ;-)

I have some machines with Linux on them. I sometimes fire up a game on
them. But I don't really think of it as 'playing games' because the
session is so infrequent, rarely lasts long and often is done for no
reason other than to see that yes, it works.

But when it comes to actually playing games... it's Windows. It's not
that I particularly like Windows (not since Windows 7) but when it
comes to games... it just works. Not without problems sometimes, and
god knows how much the Win11 sludge is slowing down my computer, but
if I get a game on Steam or GOG or stick in a CD-ROM, odds are
extremely high I'll be able to play it. Linux, for all its
improvements over the years, still hasn't matched that level of
compatibility. (And not out of any fault of Linux; the problems are
usually publisher-induced, thanks to their crappy DRM. But that's the
world we live in, so that's what I got to deal with). Sure, you can
avoid some of these difficulties by curate your game library only to
include compatible games... but then you often miss out on some
big-name titles.

I'm a fan of Linux. I use Linux. I recommend it to (some) people. I've
set up Linux computers for some relatives. In many respects it (and
derivatives like SteamOS) are far superior to Windows.

But not when it comes to gaming. There, sadly, Windows remains the
best choice.
