and that's how I feel about them.  I hate having to stay for end credit
clips in movies too.  Fortunately the end credit clips are showing up
online quickly now and I don't have to do that any more.  I can look up
who the damn caterer is if I give a damn about it online.

Credits are usually contractually mandated by the various guilds
involved in making movies, largely because studios used to treat their
employees like shit (moreso then than now) and then used their lack of
being named as an excuse to short-change them on pay. A "If you really
were deserving of the money you say we owe you, why aren't you
mentioned in the credits" sort of thing. So getting your name in the
credits became legally very important. There's reams of laws and rules
saying where the credits have to go, and who gets placed in what
order. These days, a lot of people are put into the credits of movies
even if they aren't contractually required just to be on the safe
side.

I don't know if video games have the same requirements; at least in
the beginning, it was almost certainly a) an attempt to emulate the
movie industry and suggest that video games were of the same quality,
and b) developers threw them in themselves because otherwise they were
ignored (the latter was a major reason why companies like EA and
Activision were formed, in fact. Atari treated developers like shit.
The first Easter Egg was basically a developer sneaking his name into
a game too).

I hate games you can't at least fast forward through them.  I have just
killed the game if it was actually then end, and there wasn't more play
or NG+ and no way to close it normally.  If there is more play after,
and I actually want to keep playing I'll get up and find something else
to do or pull out my phone until it's over.  That's a very rare instance
though.

There are a handful of games that do that (Ubisoft titles used to do
this all the time), and I agree: it's excruciating and unforgivable. I
ALT-F4 everytime that happens, even if it means I might miss out on
some end-credits sequence or 'new game plus' content.
