may offer it as a feature (I think Daum supported savestates; I know
DOSBox-X also has save-states) but I've found it rather buggy when it
comes to actually using it in game. It's tricky enough to do on a
console; on a PC, lacking a standardized environment where the games
did a lot of funky stuff with memory layouts, it's much more
difficult. Games could often be very particular about their states,
and save-states never restore everything perfectly back to how it was
when the state was captured.
 That said, I haven't tried using Save-States on DOSBox-X in a dog's
age, so maybe things are better now.
  

I made do with a bard instead of a samurai and also got lucky about the same time and rolled a lizardman ninja without "cheating."
The bard is pretty good - something of a jack of all trades.  Has lockpick, music, thaumaturgy and decent ranged and hide/melee.  I don't think his armor is good enough for the front line though.  Additionally, if it comes in range I'll put him as samurai eventually who also uses thaumaturgy.
Something I learned this time around - Alchemists have nice hit points. A real change from the mage.
