On September 5 Apple called to let me know the replacement had arrived. The next day I received a new, not refurbished, iPad 9, paid the $49 service fee, and set it up from iCloud.
Although apparently no longer available online from Apple, on Amazon the new-from-Apple version 9 with 256 gb and cellular is currently $549. It is eligible for AppleCare+. Very happy I bought the warranty on this one.
