I don't know, but I can guess. It's supposed to support 1920 x 1080 at 60 Hz. Even if it were only 8-bit color, that would be 1 Gb.
I think it told your computer it was USB 2.0 because it didn't see a demand demand 2.0 couldn't handle. That would let the computer use its resources more efficiently.
