If you're on OSX Unison is free and will work through Mojave:

Unison is good, but does have a few 'quirks'. It can randomly crash, although only occasionally. It also has a bad bug which can often mislabel the author of a post in the topic lists. Being long abandoned, the 'quirks' will never be fixed.

There is also Newslazer, although I've never tried it, so can't comment on how good or otherwise it is.
