As this didn't seem to propagate when I sent it originally:
I use command-line vlc in the background (--daemon). E.g.
/usr/bin/vlc --config=/home/chris/internetradio/vlcrc.pulse --no-video --no-media-library --daemon --pidfile=/var/lock/vlc-radio.pid --volume-step 128 --playlist-autostart --intf=http --http-password=xxxxxxxxx --http-port=8080 "Radio station URL here"
