Is it not the case that the  Pi uses USB to talk to the ethernet chip?

Any ideas why, and if I could improve the throughput to the ethernet to take
  advantage of the higher speed internet ?

Better than what I got with my previous provider; but I should be able to do
  even better.

That's why I cant be arsed to go beyond 40Mbps. I seldom achieve that download speed with remote sites
