In my experience over 50 years, at least 85% of computer hardware problems
are bad connections - cured by reseating boards or replugging cables.
 

Maybe that's it. One of the micro-HDMI ports is a noticeably tighter fit
than the other. However, the problem didn't seem tied to that port. It's
certainly true that modern, tiny connectors are much more frail than older,
larger styles. Micro-HDMI seems to be asking for trouble. Same for USB-C.
