I have no reason to doubt that the majority of the
participants to this discussion so far are fully aware
of what "volunteering" means.
I myself have maintained an MX + HTTP server for what was
then Chair of Theoretical Physics at the uni as an unpaid
volunteer from 2002 to 2012. Today they've had a disk issue,
so I've spent a couple hours of my time helping them move
/home from a 3 TB RAID1 to a 2 TB RAID1. (As in: did all the
work, aside of installing the HDDs in the server's case and
logging in as root, on account of not knowing the password.)
It sure was nice to see that my former colleagues still have
their mail from way back into my tenure as a sysadmin there.

contributions to Wayland so far?
I've tinkered with a number of X applications back in the
day, but I suppose my most notable contributions to free
software are those listed in GNU Emacs' etc/AUTHORS.
