Annus horribilis pour les Cantalous, les vaches de Salers ne donnent quasiment plus de lait. Mais sur soixante et quelques années, un constat s'impose : l'été dure du 14 juillet au 15 août, grosses chaleurs et parfois quelques orages, le reste du temps la température ne dépasse pas 15°C et il flotte (ce qui explique qu'on le surnomme "le Pays Vert").
