Catherine the Great latched on to Crimean.

The territorial evolution of Russia has expanded since those times.

Nothing more than a land grab, for natural resources, etc.  His
"conservative" thinkers are pushing this agenda.  But, I see no legit
claim these land grabs give him the absolute right to take.
