Well, in terms of ice hockey, the reason is my _mild_ interest. I'm a fair weather fan so only watch when sweden manages to reach at least quarter finals in some international competition with NHL players in it.
In terms of chess, I _am_ watching rec.games.chess.misc and there are some discussions there I had profitably from time to time, so welcome to join the party! ;)
