This was "way before the era of" cellphones or even 8-track tape
players.

In 1960 KJBS radio in San Francisco, California, became KFAX and
changed formats from a blend of music, news, and sports to trial the
concept of a "newspaper of the air". The call letters reflected the
word facts. However, this experiment proved unsuccessful.

I'll miss the station when I visit New York City. They gave traffic updates every 10 minutes, which when driving in the city is a major help. Thankfully, there is still 1010WINS.
