Nearly 3 million records of names, birthdates and Social Security
numbers have reportedly been compromised in a major breach of personal
data, putting people at risk of identity theft and scams.
A hacking group called USDoD stole the records of 2.9 billion people
from National Public Data, a background-check company, according to a
lawsuit earlier reported by Bloomberg Law. According to the report,
the breach occurred in April and includes full names, current and past
addresses, Social Security numbers, information regarding relatives,
and other personal data related to people living in the U.S., Canada
and the U.K.

2.9 billion? The US only has 335 million people; where are these extra 2.6 billion numbers coming from?
